Freelance Client: Joshua Bookhalter, Edmonton-based photographer
Objective: 
​The primary objective was to showcase Joshua’s large photography portfolio on a website with an easy-to-follow navigation & organization system and visually appealing elements. 
Role: 
​My role was to code the website with HTML, CSS, and jQuery, organize web hosting for the final site, and design a visual identity for Josh’s business.
Approach: 
  1. I started by meeting with the client to discuss the direction and content of the site. Based on that meeting, I created a storyboard that included a site wireframe which listed all the pages on the website with their desired function and any graphics/info to be present. I conferred with the client over which photographs he wanted featured. 
  2. I took this information and iterated to create a page mock-up for client approval. I focused on clarity, user ease, and flexibility in the base page layout. I wanted the photography to be the main focus and what the user sees when they first visit the page. The navigation was placed in a sidebar to maximize space for the photography and limit unnecessary scrolling. 
  3. After the initial mock-up was approved, I started construction on the site. I began with the creation of the base structure after which I went through the remaining pages from primary to secondary and tertiary. It was important to optimize and compress the image files for quick website loading times. 
  4. Once the structure was complete, I focused on the design of additional specialized features, including the rollover effect, the form validation and an external online store. 
  5. I tested site functionality to ensure everything was working. I did numerous rounds of this in collaboration with the client. ​Once testing was complete, I purchased the domain name for the client and uploaded his files to the agreed-upon hosting site. ​After the site was up and running, we went through another round of troubleshooting before marketing the project as final and complete. 
Final Results: 
The final website focuses on what matters most: Josh's photography. The page structure is easy to follow and leaves flexibility to add or take away different photos. The site works on desktop, tablet, and mobile. It can be viewed at: https://www.joshuabookhalter.com/
